LSB-Futures Mission
This mission statement is a continual work in progress and should not yet be considered official. We invite feedback; please send it to us at lsb-futures@freestandards.org
Mission
The lsb-futures subcommittee seeks to expand the scope of the LSB with items required by software developers in order to develop and deploy portable Linux applications. Items will be selected and standardized following the LSB consensus model.
Rationale
Most of the LSB working group needs to maintain focus on near term deliverables and respond to issues with the existing specification, test suite, and sample implementation. The lsb-futures subcommittee offloads the large amount of work of identifying, evaluating, and preparing candidates for inclusion in the LSB.
Goals
- Determine the standards requirements of the development community.
- Provide liaison between developers and component maintainers.
- Accelerate the standardization and inclusion of needed components into the LSB.
- Identify, evaluate, and track a set of candidates currently beyond the LSB that software developers require. This will help focus our efforts and provide a roadmap of where the LSB is going.
- Provide a facility where APIs/ABIs for the more important components can be polished before that component is considered for inclusion in the LSB (a proving ground).
- Provide a facility where competing conflicting standards can be evaluated until a clear choice for inclusion in the LSB emerges.
